Kilmurry Hall hosted a wonderful display of local GAA talent on Good Friday, 29th March, as clubs from all over the county contested the Roscommon Scór Sinsir Final.

The first category for decision was the ever-popular Tráth na gCeisteanna. At the initial table quiz round teams from St. Michaels, Kilmore, St. Dominic’s, Elphin, Tulsk, Creggs, Kilglass Gaels, Clann na Gael and Pádraig Pearses, took part. Tulsk, Elphin and Clann progressed to the stage final round and after a battle, a formidable Elphin regained the title they last won in 2022.

Tráth na nGeisteanna – Elphin

The Amhránaíocht Aonair was a hotly contested affair with singers battling it out to be crowned county champion.  Peadar McCaffrey (Elphin), Fionnán Seale (Padraig Pearses), Philippa Barry (Clann na nGael), Geraldine Sheeran (Pádraig Pearses) Karl Foley (Kilmore), Eimear Browne (Shannon Gaels) all gave strong performances, but it was Niamh Reynolds who won the title for St. Michael’s with her beautiful rendition of ‘Sweet Lislea’.

Amhránaíocht Aonair – Niamh Reynolds, St. Michael’s

The Recitation/Storytelling saw Tom Costello entertain the crowd with his delivery of ‘The Wake’, taking a richly deserved first senior title in many years at this level for Pádraig Pearses. In doing so, he beat off excellent opposition from Vincent Pierse and Patrick Mullooly (St. Dominic’s) and Sarah Seery from Clann na nGael.

Recitation/Storytelling – Tom Costello, Pádraig Pearses.

The Ballad Group event proved a rousing and well contested competition. Groups from St. Dominc’s, Kilmore and Pádraig Pearses gave rousing renditions of their songs, but it was a talented young group from St. Michael’s, who won the hearts of the judges, regaining the title they won in 2022.

Ballad Group – St. Michael’s

In the Novelty Act discipline, Elphin and Padraig Pearses, gave fantastic entertainment with two hilarious sketches. In a close contest, Elphin took county honours with their hilarious performance.

Novelty Act – Elphin

Undoubtedly the competition of the night, the Ceol Uirlise was a fantastic showcase for traditional music in Roscommon. Six groups from Padraig Pearses, Clann na Gael, Kilmore, Shannon Gaels, Elphin and St. Ronan’s, battled it out for their place in the Connacht final. The title went to an exceptionally polished St. Ronan’s team who last advanced to All Ireland level in 2022.

Ceol Uirlise – St. Ronan’s

Sole entrants in the Rince Seit, Elphin rose the energy levels with a spirited display to finish off one of the best county finals in Roscommon Scór in many years.

Thank you to our fantastic M.C. Cian Diffley Runaí Coiste Scór Ros Comáin, to David Nugent (sound) and the fantastic Kilmurry Hall for the welcome to their beautiful facility. Winners were presented with their cups by Cathaoirleach GLG Ros Comáin, Brian Carroll.

Our County Champions now go forward to represent Roscommon in the Connacht Scór Sinsir Final which will be held in the Tooreen Community Centre, on Sunday 14th April. The Tráth na gCeisteanna will begin at 12pm and stage events start at 1pm. This is a ticket only event and these can be purchased through the link on the Connacht GAA website and the Scór Roscomáin and Connacht Scór Facebook pages. Well done and thank you to all of our clubs for their wonderful efforts to promote Scór and the best of luck to those who progress to provincial level.

Allianz Football League Division 1

DERRY 2-19 ROSCOMMON 1-09

By Michael Wilson at Celtic Park

Derry will meet Dublin in the Allianz National League Division One final after an emphatic victory that spelt the end of Roscommon’s two year stay in the top flight.

Davy Burke’s Rossies went into the game needing something from the game to have any hope of retaining their Division One status and for three quarters of the game, they looked capable of setting up a grand stand finish in a game as open as any you’re likely to see this season.

A tight first half saw goal chances aplenty but Roscommon’s inability to capitalise on chances saw a Derry team that looked to be playing in third gear lead by three at the break. That lead was cancelled out within five minutes of the restart but when the counties headed into the home straight, Derry went through the gears to blow the visitors away.

Harte’s men hit an incredible 2-18 of their 2-19 tally from play and when they hit the accelerator Roscommon had no answer. After drawing level in the 42nd minute, the Rossies managed only one more point over the remaining half hour. Derry, by contrast, hit 1-11 and were a class apart.

Roscommon had started a must win match by retaining possession for close to three and a half minutes from the throw in, a passage of play that should have ended with the game’s opening goal but, after swapping passes with Eoin McCormack, Enda Smith blazed inches over the Derry crossbar. It was a sign of things to come as goal chances almost outnumbered pointed efforts.

A McGuigan free equalised before the game exploded into life on nine minutes. First McGuigan sent Conor Glass clear but the Derry midfielder elected to shoot over when a goal was on but perhaps the AIB Club Player of the Year knew something we didn’t because within seconds the ball was nestling in Roscommon’s net anyway!

The goal came from a mistake on the kick-out by Roscommon keeper Conor Carroll whose restart was intercepted by Conleth McGuckian who fed the ball into Declan Cassidy’s run for the Bellgahy player to blast Derry into a 1-02 to 0-1 lead that lasted only 30 seconds.

That was down to a mistake at the opposite end where Odhran Lynch misjudged a long ball in which allowed Donie Smith to nip in ahead of the Derry No. 1 to punch the bouncing ball into Derry’s net.

Paul Cassidy responded with a point for the home side but scores from Diarmuid Murtagh and McCormack tied things up again before Niall Daly’s point edged the Rossies ahead at 1-03 to 1-04 on 19 minutes.

Derry had already lost Gareth McKinless to a suspected broken nose by this point and further goal chances came and went for both teams, Lachlan Murray and Brian Stack with great openings. However a strong end to the half put Harte’s men in charge at 1-08 to 1-05 thanks to two brilliant scores from Murray and one each from Ethan Doherty and McGuigan as Derry took a three point lead into the break.

Harte responded to the open nature of the first half by introducing both Ciaran McFaul and Niall Toner at the break but it was Roscommon who came out of the changing rooms firing as points from Murtagh (f), Enda Smith and Murtagh tied things up within five minutes of the restart.

Toner’s first score of the game halted the Rossies’ march but Davy Burke’s men were throwing the kitchen sink at their hosts, despite Ethan Doherty and Murray stretching the home lead to 1-11 to 1-08.

Enda Smith had seen another goal attempt saved by the leg of Lynch at this point and it was that greater efficiency in front of the posts that was the difference between the teams. Even word of Kerry’s lead against Galway failed to rouse the Rossies as points from Ciaran McFaul, Ethan Doherty and Eoin McEvoy took the home lead out to 1-14 to 1-08.

With Roscommon’s relegation all but confirmed both team ran their respective benches but it didn’t stop the Oak Leaf assault on the scoreboard as Ethan Doherty, Cormac Murphy and McGuigan all registered scores but the game had long since ceased to be a contest.

The final whistle brought both ends of the footballing spectrum; Derry with a Croke Park final to look forward to, Roscommon preparing now for a return to Division Two after a second half that exposed the gulf between the teams.

Allianz Football League Division One

Kerry 1-17 Roscommon 1-11

By Ian Cooney at Dr Hyde Park

Kerry remain in the hunt for a place in the Allianz Division One League final after Jack O’Connor’s men produced a polished performance at Dr. Hyde Park.

The Kingdom were always able to keep the Rossies at arm’s length, with David Clifford contributing 0-6, including a point from a first-half penalty, and midfielder Joe O’Connor finding the net in injury time.

The visitors had 10 different scorers and kicked 1-16 out of their 1-17 from play, highlighting the ease at which they were able to manufacture their scores.

Roscommon improved in the second half, having trailed by four points at the break after playing with the aid of the breeze.

Cathal Heneghan’s 54th minute goal left just three points between them, but Kerry closed out the game comfortably to join Dublin on eight points on the league table.

Kerry kept possession for the opening two minutes without a Roscommon player touching the ball, which ended with a fisted point for O’Connor.

Kerry were content to probe for any available space against a packed Roscommon defence in an effort to get possession to their main shooters.

Ronan Daly, a late replace for the injured Eoin McCormack, did equalise for Roscommon, but points from David Clifford (2), Barry Dan O’Sullivan, Seán O’Brien and Darragh Roche pushed the Kingdom 0-6 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the opening quarter.

Roscommon goalkeeper Conor Carroll showed his forwards how to split the posts with an excellent 20th minute score.

Clifford added his third point of the afternoon before Enda Smith and Daire Cregg replied for Roscommon.

In the 31st minute, Kerry won a penalty, although Seán O’Shea, who was being pulled by David Murray, had diverted Darragh Roche’s crossfield attempt to the net.

Up stepped Clifford, but he blazed his effort over Conor Carroll’s crossbar to leave Kerry 0-8 to 0-4 ahead at half time.

Roscommon improved on the resumption, and two early points by Enda Smith and Daire Cregg hinted at a comeback.

But Kerry were always able to move the Roscommon defence out of position to generate the space they needed for scores.

Substitute Cathal Heneghan’s goal, after good work by Diarmuid Murtagh, left three points between them. That was as close as Roscommon came as substitutes Stephen O’Brien and Paul Geaney kicked points after being introduced before O’Connor found the net in injury time.

Allianz Football League Division One

Mayo 0-15 Roscommon 0-9

By Colm Gannon at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park

Mayo secured a convincing six-point victory over Roscommon in a game that turned decisively in the second half.

While the first half remained close, with just a single point separating the sides at the break (0-7 to 0-6), Mayo dominated the second half, outscoring Roscommon by eight points to three.

Kevin McStay’s side who were coming into the game off the back of successive losses on the road against Kerry and Tyrone, started the game brightly with Fergal Boland getting the first score of the half early doors, a trick he repeated at the start of the second period also.

Colm Reape doubled their lead with a booming effort from play after the Mayo goalkeeper came up to join the action and launch the ball over the bar from outside the 45m line.

Diarmuid Murtagh got Roscommon’s first point of the contest with a fine effort six minutes in, but Mayo were to land the next two scores through excellent Ryan O’Donoghue efforts to go into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead by the quarter of an hour mark.

Roscommon cut the lead back to two thanks to a Daire Cregg effort not long after but another O’Donoghue effort and a right footed point from Aidan O’Shea pushed Mayo four to the good. Donie Smith and Stephen Coen traded pointed to keep the four between the sides with 21 minutes gone and for the rest of the half it was all Roscommon.

Murtagh drove over a great effort from distance and then landed another to bring it back to a two point contest. Roscommon also had two goal chances in this run, with the later one falling to Enda Smith who attempted to chip Reape who he spotted off his line, but the Mayo goalkeeper pushed the ball around the post and out for a 45, which was converted by Conor Carroll to leave the score 0-7 to 0-6 at the break.

The second half looked to be teed up for a real ding dong battle, but seven unanswered points from Mayo in the opening 22 minutes of the half had the game over as a contest long before the final whistle was blown.

Boland fisted over just after the resumption, that was followed by two on the spin from O’Donoghue. Enda Hession slotted over a mark before Donnacha McHugh chipped in with a brace inside four minutes. The final score in the seven point run came from the booth of O’Donoghue with his sixth of the day and Mayo were home and hosed.

Conor Cox registered two points for Roscomon with Murtagh getting his fourth of the evening before the end, while Cillian O’Connor fisted over Mayo’s final score of the day to wrap things up on a cold, wet evening in MacHale Park.

Scorers for Mayo: Ryan O’Donoghue 0-6 (3fs), Fergal Boland 0-2, Donnacha McHugh 0-2, Aidan O’Shea 0-1, Stephen Coen 0-1, Colm Reape 0-1, Cillian O’Connor 0-1, Enda Hession 0-1 (m).
