Donie Smith Announces Retirement from Inter-County Football

Donie Smith has officially announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Boyle man made his senior debut for Roscommon in the 2012 Championship against Tyrone and went on to make 133 appearances in the primrose and blue.

Over the course of a distinguished career, Donie won:
• 2 Connacht Senior Football Championships (2017, 2019)
• 4 National Football League Division 2 titles (2015, 2018, 2020, 2022)
• 1 National Football League Division 3 title (2014)

Donie was known for his leadership and commitment to the Roscommon jersey. He had the honour of captaining the senior team in 2022 and finished his career with an impressive scoring record of 8 goals and 273 points.

Speaking on Donie’s retirement, Roscommon GAA Chairperson Brian Carroll said:

“On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years.

He always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride.

Donie’s scoring tally of 8-273 shows the consistent level of high performance that Donie gave while on the pitch.

We wish Donie, Laura, and Sadie all the very best for the future and a long, happy, and healthy life.”
